ACCENT WALLS THAT WORK: Placement Over Pigment
Written by Eryn Dietzenbach | Professionally Registered Architect – CDT
When you think of an accent wall, your mind probably jumps straight to color—a bold navy, a vibrant emerald, or a deep charcoal. Stop right there! The most effective accent walls aren’t about the paint color first; they’re about placement.
An accent wall is a powerful design tool that introduces an intentional imbalance in a space to achieve a compelling sense of visual harmony. It’s the one wall that stands apart in tone, texture, or pattern, and this deliberate difference is what makes the room feel complete.
FINDING A PERFECT SPOT FOR YOUR ACCENT WALL
Before you even look at a paint chip, you need to decide which wall is destined for greatness. The key is to identify the wall that is already the most prominent or naturally draws the eye.
IN A BEDROOM: The accent wall is almost always the one behind the head of the bed. It anchors the largest piece of furniture and serves as the visual focal point of the space.
IN A COMMERCIAL OR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SETTING: Think about where people’s focus needs to be. In a classroom, the wall with the whiteboard or main display at the front of the room is the obvious choice.
TO CONNECT MULTIPLE SPACES: Accent walls are fantastic for manipulating the perceived size and flow of a home. If you have an open floor plan or a clear line of sight through one room and into the next, consider making the far wall an accent. This technique draws the eye across both rooms simultaneously, making the entire area feel larger and more cohesive
IT’S ALL ABOUT INTENTIONAL IMBALANCE
The moment you single out one wall to be different, you create a dynamic tension with the surrounding walls. This is the goal! It’s an intentional design move that grounds the space and gives the eye a clear place to land.
So, the next time you’re planning a design refresh, put down the color swatches. Walk into the room and ask yourself: Which wall is already asking for attention? By prioritizing placement over pigment, you ensure your accent wall doesn’t just look colorful—it looks right.
